Bis 20 m hoher, kletternder Strauch mit braunroter Rinde und blattgegenständigen Ranken, diese im Kontakt mit Substrat oft mit Haftscheiben. Ranken mit 5-12 windenden Ästen. Blätter handförmig 5(-7)zählig, Teilblätter meist gestielt, lanzettlich, gezähnt, 5-15 cm lang, meist kahl, oft asymmetrisch, oberseits dunkel-, unterseits matt blaugrün, im Herbst lebhaft rot. Blütenstand eine halbkugelige Rispe mit wenigen Ästen. Blüten ähnlich wie bei Vitis vinifera, Kronblätter ca. 3 mm lang. Beeren blau, Durchmesser 5-7 mm.
