Diese Saumgesellschaften setzen sich, in Anpassung an die Beschattung, aus breitblättrigen, vielgestaltigen Kräutern zusammen, die kaum höher als 1 m wachsen. Der Geissfuss (Aegopodium) dominiert auf frischen, tiefgründigen Böden, die kaum austrocknen (Aegopodion), während sich auf zeitweilig austrocknenden Substraten eine vielfältigere Flora entwickelt (Alliarion). Die Einheit umfasst Krautsäume, deren Standorte weder sumpfig noch regelmässig überschwemmt, jedoch genügend frisch und fruchtbar sind. Das Mikroklima (ausreichende Luft- und Bodenfeuchte) begünstigt eine rege biologische Aktivität und die Stickstoffversorgung der Individuen.
