Immergrüner, bis 1 m hoher Strauch. Blattartige Kurztriebe (Phyllokladien) breit-lanzettlich, lederig steif, mit stechender Spitze 2-3,5 cm lang. Die eigentlichen Laubblätter nur ca. 1 cm lang und 2 mm breit, früh abfallend. Blüten grünlich weiss, Durchmesser ca. 5 mm, fein violett gesprenkelt, unterhalb der Mitte auf den Phyllokladien, einzeln oder zu wenigen. Frucht eine leuchtend rote Beere, durch Drehung des Phyllokladiums oft scheinbar auf dessen Unterseite.Flowering period (© Flora Helvetica 2018)

Umriss rund oder oval. Leitbündel diffus verteilt. Epidermiszellen nicht verholzt.Description
Culm-diameter 2-5 mm, center full, radius of culm in relation to wall thickness 1:1. Outline circular wavy. Culm-center full, containing unlignified cells. Culm without endodermis but with a sheath of lignified cells around the center. Epidermis cells thin-walled all around. Large vascular bundles distributed in the whole culm. Chlorenchyma present, continuous peripheral belt with unlignified round cells (like a large cortex). Vascular bundles collateral closed. Small sclerenchymatic sheath around vascular bundles with 1-2 cells. Vessel arrangement irregularly grouped or distributed. Largest vessel in the bundle small, < 20 μm.Distribution map (Atlas)
