Species description (Flora Helvetica 2018)

Stängel 10-30(-50) cm hoch, 3kantig, beblättert. Blätter borstenförmig oder rinnig, 0,5-1 mm breit. Blütenstände end- und seitenständig, kopfig, zuerst weiss, später rötlich, 0,5-1 cm lang, +/- gestielt, breiter als lang, aus mehreren, meist 2blütigen, 4-5 mm langen Ährchen bestehend, von den Hochblättern meist nicht überragt. Perigonborsten 9-13, kürzer bis wenig länger als die Frucht, mit rückwärts gerichteten Haaren. Frucht gelbbraun, 2-2,5 mm lang.

Description

Culm-diameter 1-2 mm, wall large, radius of culm in relation to wall thickness approximately 1: 0.5. Outline triangular, obtusely. Culm-center hollow and surrounded by many large thin-walled, not lignified cells. Epidermis cells thick-walled all around. Large vascular bundles arranged in one peripheral row. Small or rudimentary vascular bundles within the chlorenchyma. Chlorenchyma in round, oval, square or rectangular groups. Sclerenchyma belt absent. Vascular bundles collateral closed. Sclerenchymatic sheath around vascular bundles bilateral, large at both radial ends. Vessels arrangement in vascular bundles in lateral position. Largest vessel in the bundle 20-50 μm. Cavities (intercellulars) between parenchyma-cells small, often triangular. Distinct cavities (intercellulars) in the protoxylem area of vascular bundles. Crystals absent.
