Ähnlich wie P. avium, aber nur bis 10 m hoch, Blätter derb, glänzend (bei P. avium dünn), Blattstiel ohne Drüsen, aber solche an den untersten Blattzähnen, Blütenstiele am Grund von Knospenschuppen und einigen kleinen Blättern umgeben, die aus derselben Knospe hervorbrechen wie die Blüten, Kronblätter fast rund (bei P. avium oval), reife Früchte meist rot, 8-15 mm breit.

Checklist 2017 comments

Wegfall des Ausdrucks s.l.: Die Art wurde bisher als «sensu lato» (s.l.) gekennzeichnet, um sie von der gleichlautenden (autonymen) «sensu stricto-Art» (s.str.) zu unterscheiden. Neu wird das Taxon nicht mehr in Unterarten aufgeteilt. Die noch im SISF-2 akzeptierte Unterart P. cerasus subsp. acida (Dumort) Asch. & Graebn. entspricht der Hybridform P. ×gondouinii Rehd., die aus der Kreuzung von P. cerasus L. × P. avium L. hervorgegangen ist.
