1-3 m hoch, verzweigt, kahl. Stängel oft rötlich. Blätter bis 25 cm lang, eiförmig, mit welligem, aber nicht gezähntem Rand, kurz gestielt, wechselständig. Blüten in langen, schmalen Trauben, 5-15 mm lang gestielt. Perigonblätter 5, 2-4 mm lang, oval, zuerst hellgrün bis weiss, später rot. Staubblätter meist 10, etwa so lang wie die Perigonblätter. Frucht eine 10fächerige und 10rippige Beere, dunkelrot bis schwarz. Fruchtstand hängend.
