Species description

Verholztes Gras, (2,5-)5-12 m hoch. Rhizome und Ausläufer sich rasch ausbreitend, oft mehrere Meter pro Jahr, und einzeln stehende Halme (Rohre) treibend. Halm in 15-30 cm lange, hohle Internodien gegliedert, diese eine deutliche Rinne (Gattungsmerkmal!) aufweisend, am Grunde oft mit stark verkürzten Internodien, die den Halmgrund aufgebläht erscheinen lassen (Artmerkmal!). Junge Triebe grün, die älteren goldgelb bis orange. Halmknoten mit zwei pulverig weissen, später verkahlenden Querwülsten und mit je zwei (selten drei) Ästen. Endzweige mit 2-3 Blättern, diese 6-12 cm lang und 1-1,8 cm breit, kahl oder in der Nähe des Blattstiels behaart, grün, oft mit gelblichen Rändern, glatt, Nerven undeutlich. Blatthäutchen kurz (1-2 mm), gestutzt oder schwach konvex. Blütenrispen von sich überlappenden Hüllblättern umschlossen. Blütezeit zeitgleich und sporadisch alle 15-30 Jahre und von den Umweltfaktoren auch abhängig.
