Tree up to 50 m. Bark from dark gray to brown, deeply fissured. Upper margin of leaf scars lacking a “mustache” of dense velvety hairs. Leaves compound, petiolate, 20-60 cm, glabrescent above, abaxial side covered with glandular hairs; never sticky to the touch. Leaflets 15-23, 3-15 cm in length, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, base distinctly asymmetrical, terminal leaflet absent or reduced in size, margin serrate. Male inflorescences (catkins) pendant, green, 5-15 cm, stamens 17-50 in one staminate flower; female flowers 1-3, carpels with green or green-reddish papillose stigmas. Fruits subglobose to globose, husk brownish-green, somewhat fleshy, pubescent; nuts brown, ovoid, ridged, deeply corrugated.
